US Oncology, Oncology EHR Coalition Comments to CMS on Meaningful Use Regulations

On Monday, March 15th US Oncology, Altos Solutions, Inc., Impac Medical Systems, Inc. and Varian Medical Systems sent a joint letter to CMS to offer comments on proposed regulations relating to electronic health record (EHR) and health information technology (HIT) standards. Together the organizations signing the joint comment letter represent the vast majority of all oncology EHR systems currenlty utilized in the United States.

The comments respond to the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) on the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the Federal Register on January 13, 2010.  While the coalition fully supports HIT and electronic health records (EMR) as one of the greatest tools for the advancement of quality, cost-effective cancer care, it also expressed concerns about certain aspects of the proposed regulation relative to the use of oncology-specific EHRs.
