Congress Scrambles to Avert Medicare Physician Payment Cuts
Today, Republicans and Democrats passed a last-minute agreement to avert the sustainable growth rate formula (SGR) cuts that were scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2012. The 27.4% SGR Medicare physician payment cut will now be averted until March 1, 2012. This 2-month extension was passed by unanimous consent in both the House and Senate today, and signed into law by the President.
As part of the agreement reached between the parties, both chambers will select members to serve on a conference committee to negotiate extending the SGR patch up to 2 years as was recently voted on by the House. The conference will meet after the new year to work on a longer-term Medicare reimbursement fix, as well as year-long solutions to extend the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits.
